Gelada

Field profile

The gelada is a heavily built, long-maned monkey endemic to the Ethiopian highlands, where it feeds on grassland by day and sleeps on cliff ledges at night. Both sexes carry a bare patch of skin on the chest. It is the sole surviving species of a once widespread genus.
