Gharial

Field profile

The gharial is a fish-eating river crocodilian with an extraordinarily narrow snout carrying more than a hundred interlocking teeth. Adult males develop a bulbous growth at the snout tip called a ghara. Once widespread across the northern Indian subcontinent, it now survives in a handful of river stretches.
