The giant panda is a bear that has specialised almost entirely on bamboo, which makes up the overwhelming majority of its diet by mass. It retains the short digestive tract and carnivore-type gut of its lineage, and compensates by eating for many hours a day. Its status improved from Endangered to Vulnerable following decades of habitat protection in China.
