Animal profile
Heloderma suspectum
The Gila monster is a heavy-bodied, slow-moving venomous lizard, black with pink or orange beadwork patterning, reaching about 50 centimetres. It spends most of its life underground and feeds mainly on eggs and nestling mammals and birds. A peptide from its venom became the basis for a class of diabetes drugs.
