Field profile

The giraffe weevil is a small red-and-black attelabid beetle with a greatly elongated neck, much longer in males than in females. Females roll a leaf of the host plant into a tube around a single egg. The species is endemic to Madagascar and is a familiar subject of nature photography there.

The giraffe weevil rolls a leaf around one egg

The male's long neck is used to fight rivals, but the female's shorter one is a tool. She scores a leaf, folds it in stages and rolls it into a tight tube containing a single egg, then cuts the tube free.
