Glass Sponge

Sponges whose skeletons are built of six-rayed silica spicules, often fused into rigid glass lattices. Their bodies are largely syncytial, meaning much of the tissue is continuous cytoplasm rather than separate cells. Some species form reefs metres thick that persist for thousands of years.
