The great blue heron is the largest heron in North America, a tall blue-grey bird with a heavy dagger bill and a black plume behind the eye. It hunts fish, amphibians, rodents and reptiles by standing motionless in shallow water and striking. It nests in colonies of stick platforms high in trees.
