Great Tinamou

Field profile

The great tinamou is a plump, cryptically coloured ground bird of tropical forest, related to the ratites but capable of flight. It walks quietly through leaf litter feeding on fallen fruit, seeds and invertebrates, and gives a haunting tremulous whistle at dusk. Males incubate the eggs.
