The greater horseshoe bat is named for the horseshoe-shaped flap of skin around its nostrils, which shapes the ultrasonic beam it emits through its nose. It hangs free from cave and roof timbers rather than wedging into crevices. In Britain it is a scarce species largely confined to the southwest.
