Greater Siren

Field profile

The greater siren is a long, eel-like aquatic salamander that can exceed 90 centimetres. It has external gills and a pair of small front limbs, and no hind limbs at all. It lives in vegetation-choked shallow water and can survive dry periods buried in mud.
