The hawksbill is a small, narrow-headed sea turtle named for its tapering beak, which it uses to prise food from crevices on coral reefs. Its overlapping shell scutes were the source of commercial tortoiseshell, and centuries of trade drove severe declines. It remains among the most threatened marine turtles.
