Animal profile
Dynastes hercules
The Hercules beetle is a rhinoceros beetle of the subfamily Dynastinae and one of the largest insects in the world by length. Males carry a long forward-projecting thoracic horn opposed by a smaller head horn, forming a pincer used in contests with rival males. Larvae feed on decaying wood and take a year or more to mature.
