Hermit crabs are decapods of the superfamily Paguroidea whose soft, asymmetrically coiled abdomen is protected inside a borrowed gastropod shell. More than eight hundred species are known, from tide-pool animals a centimetre long to the terrestrial coconut crab. Shell supply is a limiting resource for most populations.
