The western honey bee is a managed rather than fully domesticated insect; colonies can and do live independently of beekeepers. A colony consists of a single reproductive queen, tens of thousands of workers and seasonal males. It is the most economically significant managed pollinator, though many crops are pollinated more efficiently by wild bees.
