Field profile

The Japanese rhinoceros beetle, known as kabutomushi, is a dynastine scarab in which males bear a forked head horn. Adults congregate at sap wounds on trees and males fight there for access to feeding sites and females. The species is widely kept as a pet in Japan and is a fixture of summer childhood.
