Animal profile
Macrocheira kaempferi
The Japanese spider crab has the greatest leg span of any living arthropod, with claw-tip to claw-tip measurements exceeding three metres in the largest males. Its body, by contrast, is modest, rarely more than about forty centimetres across the carapace. It is a slow-moving scavenger of the deep shelf, often encrusted with sponges and other growth.
