Animal profile
Melanophila acuminata
Melanophila acuminata is a small dark jewel beetle whose larvae develop only in freshly fire-killed conifers. Adults fly towards burning forest, arriving while the ground is still hot, and lay eggs in scorched trunks that have lost their chemical defences. They carry infrared receptors on the thorax.
