Field profile

The large flying fox is among the biggest bats in the world, with a wingspan that can exceed 1.4 metres. It feeds on nectar, pollen and fruit, and roosts by day in conspicuous colonies that may number in the thousands. Body mass is far more modest than the wingspan suggests, rarely above about 1.1 kilograms.
