Field profile

The lesser siren is an eel-shaped aquatic salamander typically 18 to 50 centimetres long, with external gills, small forelimbs and no hind limbs. It occupies muddy, vegetation-filled shallow water and is largely nocturnal. It is far more common than its rarity of sighting suggests.
