The loggerhead is a heavy-headed sea turtle built around a crushing bite, feeding on whelks, crabs and other hard-shelled invertebrates. Hatchlings from the south-eastern United States spend years drifting in the North Atlantic gyre before returning to coastal waters. It is the most abundant sea turtle nesting in the United States.
