Animal profile
Chinchilla lanigera
The long-tailed chinchilla is a colonial Andean rodent with the densest fur of any land mammal. Wild populations collapsed under the nineteenth and twentieth century pelt trade and remain small and fragmented. It is crepuscular, shelters in rock crevices and feeds on grasses, seeds and cactus fruit.
