Animal profile
Anas platyrhynchos
The mallard is a large dabbling duck, the male recognisable by a glossy green head and white neck ring, the female mottled brown. It is the ancestor of almost all domestic duck breeds and adapts readily to human-modified water. Its willingness to interbreed with related ducks has blurred the genetic boundaries between it and several of them.
