Marine Iguana

Field profile

The marine iguana is the only lizard that forages in the sea, grazing algae from intertidal rocks and, in larger males, from the seabed on dives. It is endemic to the Galápagos, where distinct subspecies differ markedly in size and colour between islands. Salt taken in with food is expelled through nasal glands in a characteristic sneeze.
