Animal profile
Chelus fimbriata
The matamata is a side-necked freshwater turtle with a knobbed, ridged carapace and a broad, flattened head fringed with skin flaps. It looks like a waterlogged pile of bark and leaves. It walks slowly along the bottom of shallow blackwater rather than swimming, and feeds almost entirely on fish.
