Field profile

The Mediterranean monk seal is a large, dark seal of rocky coastlines that now breeds almost exclusively in sea caves. Once common on open beaches, it retreated to inaccessible caverns under human pressure. It is one of the rarest seals in the world but its status has improved in recent decades.

Ancient writers describe monk seals basking openly on Mediterranean shores. Modern ones pup almost entirely inside sea caves with underwater entrances, a behavioural shift widely read as a response to centuries of human disturbance.
