Animal profile
Danaus plexippus
The monarch is a large orange-and-black nymphalid whose caterpillars feed almost exclusively on milkweed. Eastern North American monarchs undertake a multi-generation migration to a small cluster of overwintering sites in central Mexico. The species is common in absolute numbers but its migratory phenomenon is considered fragile.
