Field profile

The muskellunge is the largest member of the pike family, a solitary ambush predator of North American lakes and rivers. It grows more slowly and lives at far lower densities than pike. Large adults exceed a metre and a half.

Muskellunge live at naturally sparse densities

The muskellunge's reputation as the fish of ten thousand casts reflects real ecology rather than caution. As a large solitary top predator it occurs at low natural densities, often well under one adult per hectare in waters that support it.
