Natterjack Toad

Field profile

A small toad with a distinctive yellow stripe down the spine that runs rather than hops. It is confined to sandy open habitats and breeds in very shallow, warm and often temporary pools. In Britain it is rare and legally protected, restricted to a small number of dune and heath sites.
