Animal profile
Teredo navalis
The naval shipworm is a wood-boring bivalve with a long, worm-like body and two small shells reduced to rasping tools at the head. It tunnels into submerged timber, lining its burrow with calcium carbonate. It has caused enormous damage to wooden ships, piers and sea defences.
