The northern elephant seal is the largest seal in the northern hemisphere, with males far heavier than females and bearing an inflatable proboscis. It breeds on beaches in California and Mexico and forages far offshore across the North Pacific. The species recovered from a severe nineteenth-century population bottleneck.
