Field profile

The okapi is a forest-dwelling relative of the giraffe with a chocolate-brown coat and horizontal white stripes on the hindquarters and upper legs. It is solitary, shy, and was unknown to European science until 1901. It browses leaves, buds and fungi in the Congo Basin and is threatened by habitat loss and armed conflict.
