Olm

Field profile

The olm is a blind, pale, permanently aquatic cave salamander around 20 to 30 centimetres long, with external gills retained for life and reduced, skin-covered eyes. It lives in the flooded passages of Dinaric karst and can go long periods without food. A dark, functional-eyed subspecies, the black olm, is known from a small area in Slovenia.
