Field profile

The orca is the largest member of the dolphin family, with males reaching about nine metres and carrying a dorsal fin up to 1.8 metres tall. Populations divide into ecotypes that differ in diet, dialect and behaviour, and that rarely interbreed. Some, such as the southern resident salmon eaters of the north-east Pacific, number only in the dozens.
