The pelican eel, also called the gulper eel, is a slender deep-sea fish with an enormous loosely hinged mouth and a whip-like tail. Its body tapers to a thread ending in a small luminous organ. It belongs to the eel order Anguilliformes despite looking very unlike a moray or conger.
