Field profile

A very large forest eagle with a shaggy crest and a deep, narrow bill. It hunts a wide range of vertebrates, from flying lemurs and civets to snakes and other birds. It is confined to the Philippines and has one of the smallest populations of any large eagle.

Its scientific name records a mistaken diet

Pithecophaga jefferyi means monkey-eater, from early accounts of the bird taking macaques. Later study showed its usual prey is the Philippine flying lemur, along with civets, snakes and other birds; monkeys are a minor item.
