Field profile

The piping plover is a small, pale shorebird that nests in a bare scrape on open sand. Its colouring matches dry beach so closely that eggs are easily trodden on unseen. It is federally protected in the United States and listed as endangered in Canada.

Piping Plover

The piping plover nest is invisible by design

A piping plover lays four speckled eggs in a shallow scrape of open sand, sometimes lined with pebbles or shell fragments. The camouflage is so effective against predators that the main risk from people is being stepped on rather than being hunted.
