Field profile

The pygmy hippopotamus stands roughly seventy-five to one hundred centimetres at the shoulder and weighs a fraction of its common relative. It is a forest animal, solitary and largely nocturnal, and far more terrestrial in habit. Fewer than three thousand are thought to survive in the wild.
