Animal profile
Equus quagga quagga
The quagga was a southern African zebra striped only on the head, neck and forequarters, its rear half a plain brown. It grazed the Karoo grasslands in large numbers until settler hunting removed it during the nineteenth century. The last known individual died in Amsterdam's Artis zoo in 1883.
