The red knot is a medium-sized sandpiper, grey in winter and brick-red beneath when breeding. It migrates between high Arctic breeding grounds and distant coastal wintering areas, refuelling at a small number of critical stopovers. The rufa subspecies is listed as threatened in the United States.
