Field profile

The red salamander is a stout lungless salamander around 10 to 18 centimetres long, bright red to orange-red with irregular black spots and, in young animals, yellow eyes. It lives near clean springs and seepages. Older individuals darken and their spotting can merge into a purplish ground colour.

The bright red juvenile red salamander closely resembles the toxic red eft of the eastern newt, and experiments with captive birds suggest predators that have learned to avoid efts also avoid the harmless mimic.
