Red velvet mites, family Trombidiidae, are plump scarlet arachnids a few millimetres long, covered in dense hairs that give a velvety texture. Adults are soil predators eating small arthropods and eggs. Their larvae are parasitic on insects, and mass emergences after rain are a familiar sight in monsoon regions.
