Field profile

The rosy-faced lovebird is a small stocky green parrot with a rose-pink face and throat and a blue rump. It lives in dry country, often in flocks, and depends on standing water. In Namibia it commonly nests inside the vast communal structures built by sociable weavers.

Lovebirds carry nest material tucked in their feathers

Female rosy-faced lovebirds strip long pieces of bark and leaf and wedge them among their rump feathers, flying to the nest with a bundle stowed on their back rather than carried in the bill.
