The sacred scarab is a dung beetle that forms dung into a ball and rolls it away from the pat before burying it. It was venerated in ancient Egypt, where the ball-rolling behaviour was linked to the movement of the sun. Its front legs are toothed paddles adapted for cutting and shaping dung rather than walking.
