Field profile

The satin bowerbird is a medium-sized Australian songbird in which mature males are glossy blue-black with violet-blue eyes while females and young males are olive-green with scalloped underparts. Males build and decorate display structures on the forest floor. Males take years to acquire adult plumage.

Satin Bowerbird

The bowerbird bower is a stage, not a nest

Males build a twin-walled avenue of sticks and decorate it with collected objects, overwhelmingly blue ones. No eggs are ever laid there. The female builds a separate cup nest in a tree and raises the young alone.
