Sea Butterfly

Field profile

The sea butterfly is a small planktonic sea snail, usually only a few millimetres across, with a thin coiled shell of aragonite. It swims by flapping two wing-like extensions of the foot. It is abundant enough in polar waters to be a major food source for fish, seabirds and whales.
