Shoebill

Field profile

The shoebill is a tall grey swamp bird with an enormous clog-shaped bill ending in a sharp hook. It stands motionless for long periods in papyrus swamps, hunting lungfish and other large aquatic prey. Solitary and slow-breeding, it is confined to a scattered set of wetlands and is threatened by habitat loss and the live bird trade.
