Field profile

The Sunda slow loris is a nocturnal, deliberate-moving primate with forward-facing eyes and a short tail hidden in dense fur. It moves hand over hand through the canopy without leaping, feeding on gum, nectar, fruit and insects. It is among the very few venomous mammals.

The slow loris delivers a venomous bite

A slow loris raises its arms above its head, draws secretion from a gland on the upper arm into its mouth, and mixes it with saliva. The resulting bite can cause severe tissue damage and, in rare human cases, anaphylactic shock.
