The southern flying squirrel is a small nocturnal tree squirrel that glides between trunks on a membrane stretched from wrist to ankle. It nests in tree cavities, often communally in winter, and eats nuts, fungi, lichens, insects and occasionally eggs. Its large eyes suit low-light foraging.
