The southern white rhinoceros is the larger of the two African rhino species and the most numerous rhino on earth, though its numbers have fallen again under poaching pressure. It is a pure grazer with a broad, square lip. The entire modern population descends from a small remnant group protected in Zululand in the late nineteenth century.
