Animal profile
Lytta vesicatoria
Lytta vesicatoria is a metallic green blister beetle, not a fly. Its haemolymph contains cantharidin, a caustic compound that raises blisters on skin. Larvae are parasitic on the brood of solitary bees, and dried beetles were used for centuries in medicine and as a reputed aphrodisiac.
